The principle

In aesthetic medicine, the operating principle of a peel is to provoke controlled irritation of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. This helps reduce wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, blackheads and hyperpigmentation, while improving skin texture and appearance and stimulating collagen production.

Both superficial and non-surficial peels can be performed by a specialist doctor using a variety of chemicals, such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and in different concentrations.

Depending on the desired effect, the peel can be superficial (small wrinkles, skin radiance), medium (more marked imperfections) or deep (more severe imperfections). A very wide range of indications can be treated with peels.

Possible applications

  • Dull complexion

Dull complexion is caused by poor circulation leading to vasoconstriction of the blood vessels. Pollution, smoking, lack of hydration, creams not adapted to skin type, stress, etc., there are many causes of a dull complexion.

  • Dark circles

They are caused by a darker variation in the color of the skin under the eye. Different shades are possible: brown, bluish or purplish. Dark circles are constitutional or can be caused by fatigue, smoking, etc. They accentuate the tired look.

  • Oily and acne-prone skin

Oily skin is characterized by excessive sebum production. Dead cells, bacteria and dirt accumulate more easily and clog pores, leading to blackheads and pimples.

  • Acne scars

After years of acne, it’s not uncommon for light scars to mark the face, giving the skin an irregular texture.

  • Pigment spots

Pigmentation spots are caused by exposure to the sun and UV rays in general. These are melanin deposits located in the thickness of the skin. Pregnancy mask (melasma) is also very common. It manifests itself as brown pigmentation of the face, sometimes triggered by pregnancy or oral contraceptives.

  • Signs of aging skin

Aging manifests itself in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and the loss of skin firmness. Skin on the face, neck, décolleté, hands, back and any other area with skin imperfections can be treated. Peels can be combined with other aesthetic medicine treatments such as PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections to maximize results.

The course of sessions

At the Claris Clinic, an informative consultation with a specialist is always carried out before any peel to determine the best treatment option and rule out any contraindications. The choice of chemical (trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc.) and peeling technique must be tailored to each patient’s skin type, medical history and aesthetic goals.

Skin preparation may be recommended beforehand, depending on the skin type, and specific local skin care products will be applied to the treated skin for 1 to 2 weeks.

Medical peels

During the session, the skin is carefully cleansed, degreased and disinfected. The peel is then applied to the skin and left in place for a certain length of time, depending on the depth of the peel. Tingling and heating sensations may be experienced due to the acids. Once the allotted time has elapsed, the peel is “neutralized” and rinsed off, except in the case of TCA peels. A soothing cream is applied, along with UV protection. The treatment can be completed with an LED session to reduce any redness.

The number of sessions required depends on the depth of the peel and the treatment objective. It is necessary to plan several sessions with the specialist to obtain the desired results.

The peel is generally performed in autumn and winter, as early exposure to the sun is prohibited after treatment. It is performed in the office and does not require anesthesia. There is no social eviction for a light peel. For medium and deep peels, everything depends on the skin’s sensitivity and the intensity of the peel used.

After the peel

At the end of the session, the treated skin may be red and feel warm, tight or itchy. After certain peels (medium to deep), the skin will peel from day 2 onwards. Small scabs may also form, as well as hyperpigmentation, which will be transitory. You should scrupulously avoid exposure to UV rays between sessions, and regularly apply SPF50+ protection as well as a moisturizing and soothing cream. You will also be asked to avoid the sauna, hammam, swimming pool and any cosmetics or treatments until your skin has fully recovered.

The results

Mesopeels

Peel results depend on the type of peel and the depth of skin treated. In general, the results of a superficial peel may be visible as early as the first session, while the results of a medium or deep peel may take several weeks to appear.

Superficial peels can improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine wrinkles, pigment spots and minor skin imperfections, and results can last from a few months to a year. Medium peels can also reduce deeper wrinkles, acne scars and pigment spots, and results can last from one to two years. Deep peels can have more spectacular results, but may require a longer recovery time and results may last several years.

Peel results can vary from person to person, however, and depend on many factors, such as age, skin type, depth of skin treated, number of sessions and lifestyle.

FAQ

What are the possible complications?

Possible complications depend on the type of peel and the depth of skin treated. To minimize risks, peels at the Claris Clinic are performed by physicians or specialists under medical supervision.

  • Allergic reaction: some people may be allergic to the products used in the peel, which can lead to skin rash, itching and redness.
  • Skin infection: deep peels can damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to skin infection.
  • Abnormal scarring: deep peels can damage the dermis layer of the skin, leading to abnormal scarring, such as scar hypertrophy or keloid scarring.
  • Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation: the peel can cause excessive or insufficient melanin production, which can result in hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation of the skin. UV protection is essential to avoid this complication.
  • Skin burn: deep peels can damage the skin to some extent, in rare cases resulting in skin burns.

The number of sessions required depends on the type of peel, the condition of the skin and the results you wish to achieve. For medium or deep peels, 1 to 3 sessions may be enough to achieve significant results.

Every case is different, and the number of sessions may vary according to each patient and his or her individual response to treatment. It is therefore essential to discuss your goals and expectations with your specialist during a consultation to determine the number of sessions best suited to you.
