Injections of botulinum toxin (Botox) and hyaluronic acid are used to reshape areas of the face and reduce or fill in wrinkles and lines. An injection session can be carried out alone or in combination with other aesthetic or surgical techniques such as resurfacing (peeling or laser treatment), blepharoplasty (upper or lower eyelids) or a facelift.
Injection of hyaluronic acid is the ideal technique for smoothing wrinkles, restoring skin plumpness and sculpting face shape.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in skin, joints and cartilage. The body produces it naturally to renew skin tissue and hydrate the skin.
Injectable hyaluronic acid used in aesthetic medicine is identical to the substance produced by the body, and is isolated using biotechnological procedures. It is currently widely used, is known to be well-tolerated by the skin and give natural results. It is an absorbable product, and is injected in a different way to Botox® (see below), but the two treatments are complementary.
Smoothing wrinkles and facial skin
Deep static wrinkles (nose to mouth lines, marionette lines, wrinkles around the mouth) lend the face a sad or tired appearance. Filling these wrinkles using hyaluronic acid makes the face look younger. Hyaluronic acid can also treat sagging skin by providing more volume.
With time, lips tend to lose volume, which makes them look thin and lose definition. Hyaluronic acid injections can:
- Restore lip contours
- Restore a Cupid’s bow shape
- Increase lip volume for better symmetry
- Hydrate lips
Botulinum toxin is an injectable product that freezes the muscles that cause expressive wrinkles, while still allowing the face to move. It is injected in very small amounts into muscles, and temporarily causes gradual loosening. It is absorbable and is not hazardous to the body.
Expressive wrinkles are the first ones to develop on the face. These originate in facial movements when we express our emotions. Horizontal forehead wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, small wrinkles around the mouth, among others. In young people, the skin springs back smoothly after muscle contractions. But, after the age of thirty, the skin loses elasticity and retains small lines after movement. These lines become gradually deeper and remain permanently visible.
Botulinum toxin injection is primarily administered to the face.
It improves the face and/or corrects some signs of ageing:
- Forehead: treatment of forehead wrinkles and frown lines
- Corners of eyes: treatment of crow’s feet
- Mouth lines: treatment of marionette lines
Botulinum toxin injections smooth the skin and flatten out wrinkles. The face is relaxed and keeps its natural mobility.
Results are visible from the third day, and are at their best two weeks after the session. The product lasts around six months.
