What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by a bacterium – Clostridium botulinum – which, when injected, temporarily paralyzes the muscles responsible for the appearance of expression lines, while maintaining facial mobility. Its active ingredient is therefore of natural origin, and its use originated in the United States.
Botulinum toxin has been used for many years in a wide range of indications other than aesthetic or anti-aging medicine, such as the treatment of excessive perspiration(hyperhidrosis) or to combat bruxism, the hypertrophy of jaw muscles.
They go by different trade names, depending on the pharmaceutical companies that produce them(Azzalure®, Bocouture®, Vistabel®, Xéomin®, etc.). At Claris Clinic, only the best brands are used to guarantee safe , natural results.
What applications does botulinum toxin have?
Injected in very small doses into a muscle, botulinum toxin temporarily causes the muscle to gradually relax. It is an absorbable product and poses no danger to the body.
Expression wrinkles arise from the movements of our face when we express our emotions: horizontal forehead wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, fine vertical lines at the corners of the lips, etc. In young people, the skin regains its smooth appearance after each muscular contraction, but from the age of thirty onwards, the skin becomes less elastic and ends up retaining the mark of small furrows when it is stressed. These grooves then gradually deepen and become permanently visible.
The most common botulinum toxin injections used in aesthetic medicine concern the following areas:
- Forehead: treatment of forehead and eyebrow wrinkles (“frown lines”)
- Eye corners: treatment of “crow’s feet” wrinkles
- Commissure of the lips: bitterness fold treatment
- Neck: to reduce the appearance of muscle contractures
- Eyebrow lift
- Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the armpits or hands)
- Bruxism (injection into jaw muscles)
Botulinum toxin injections can be complemented by other types of injections, such as hyaluronic acid.
Results are visible from the third day, and are optimal two weeks after the session. The product’s effect lasts approximately six months.
