Breast reconstruction consists in changing the size and appearance (shape, areola, nipple) of a breast from which some or all tissue has been removed, usually due to the removal of a tumour.
This is done in several steps. The first consists in rebuilding the breast. Several different techniques are available (expansion, implants, transfer of muscle and/or fat and/or skin tissue). The choice depends on a number of parameters.
The second step consists in reconstructing the areola and the nipple.
To obtain the best possible symmetry, the other breast may also be surgically changed.
