Abdominoplasty is intended to remove skin that is distended, scarred or has stretch marks and to stretch the healthy, peripheral skin on the stomach.
The most common reasons for the procedure
Stomach skin has become distended or damaged by scars or stretch marks. Excess abdominal fat or on the sides can be removed by combining the surgery with liposuction.
Before the procedure
A pre-surgery assessment is done in line with prescriptions. There is also a meeting with the anaesthesiologist at least 48 hours before the procedure.
D DAY – 30: It is highly recommended that patients stop smoking. If there are associated risk factors, patients may also be asked to stop taking oral contraceptives.
D DAY – 10: No medicines containing aspirin can be taken.
Some types of anaesthesia require fasting six hours prior to surgery.
Average duration: between 1.5 and 3 hours
The surgery consists in removing skin between the navel and the pubic area then folding over healthy skin, usually from above the navel, downward. The muscle wall is re-tightened if necessary. The navel is kept and replaced in its normal position via an incision made in the lowered skin. The scar is usually located at the top edge of the pubic hairline and runs into the folds of the groin. At the end of the surgery, a shaped bandage is made and used in combination with a compression garment.
After the procedure
The period after surgery can be painful, especially if the muscle wall was tightened or liposuction performed. It is recommended that patients rest as much as possible on their back and avoid all sudden movements for the first few days. The sutures are removed between the tenth and fourteenth day. The compression garment must be worn day and night for four to six weeks.
The patient’s profession will determine when they can return to work, but they normally can on the eighth day for light work. Sports can be taken up again around the sixth week.
It takes a year before the results can be fully seen. This is the time it will take for the scar to fade, although it will never disappear entirely. In addition to improved aesthetics, abdominoplasty will generally provide a significant improvement in overall comfort.
Patients receive a complete information sheet about the procedure during their first consultation. It must be read carefully to enable a decision with all relevant information in hand.
